The "Auto-Backup on Change" feature of FileBack PC utilizes a feature in
Windows to know when a change has taken place in a file or folder. It does
not interject itself into the file system to monitor all file operations.
For the Auto-Backup on Change feature to work, FileBack PC must be notified
of changes that take place in the source and/or destination folders. With
this feature active, Windows will notify whenever a change takes place in one of
the requested folders. However, for this feature to work, the following
conditions must be met:
- The folder must reside on a Windows-based PC. The folder change
notification functionality is not supported on other systems, such as
Linux or Netware servers, and other devices that rely on similar
technologies, such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. If
FileBack PC attempts to request notification from a device which does not
support it, the device usually returns an "Incorrect function" error, though
this is not always the case.
- Change notification over networks is only supported by versions of
Windows based on NT technologies, such as Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003 Server,
and Vista. Windows 95, 98, and Me do not support change notification
over networks.
- Change notification over networks only works for mapped drive letter
connections, and is not supported for UNC paths.
If a change notification is requested from a networked PC and that computer
is restarted or loses its network connection the change notification request
automatically expires and notification of the expiration is not sent to FileBack
PC. As such, FileBack PC has a feature (under File / Preferences /
General, Renew File Change Notification Requests...) to periodically cancel old
requests and issue new requests for notification. If you find that files
are changing on a networked device and FileBack PC is not receiving
notification, please turn on this option and adjust the frequency as necessary.
In addition, when a change occurs Windows does not specify which file or
folder has changed, so FileBack PC must scan all files and subfolders to
determine on its own which files have changed. Advanced Change
Notification (File / Preferences / General / Use Advanced Change Notification)
requests notification from each of the individual subfolders under the
source/destination folders of each backup job, but there is a limit imposed by
Windows how many folders can be monitored, and turning on this option may cause
this limit to be exceeded. In this case, error messages will be added to
the log indicating which folders are not being monitored.
